PS Detect
PS Detect Improves Male Fertility Diagnostics
Not all sperm are equal. Some sperm have optimal shape and some have optimal motility. PS Fertility has now identified that only some sperm possess the optimal ability to fertilize an egg. Through PS Fertility’s scientific discovery, we know that phosphatidylserine, known as PS, must be present on the outside of the sperm for fertilization to occur. PS Fertility’s PS Detect test can measure the percent of sperm capable of fertilization – PS Score. A male’s PS Score is predictive of his overall fertility. PS Detect can help identify infertility not detected by a traditional semen analysis, as 20-30% of all patients with a normal semen analysis are misdiagnosed as fertile.
Low PS Score = Low Fertilization Rate: even when other semen parameters are normal
Varicocele, Infertility and PS Score
Approximately 40% of infertile men also have a varicocele. A varicocele is a medical condition when veins in the scrotum become swollen and enlarged. Some men experience pain and discomfort as a result of this condition, while others are only made aware of it through a physical examination.
PS Fertility performed a study focusing on the impact of varicocele repair surgery on PS Score among men suffering from infertility. Pre-surgery, most participants in our study had normal semen analysis parameters, but all had a PS Score below normal. In a 3 month follow up, all participants measured well into the normal PS Score range and some had acheived a pregnancy post varicocele surgery repair.
PS Score can help identify male’s with varicocele that could improve their fertility through varicocele repair surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is PS Detect different than a traditional semen analysis?
- PS Detect measures the percent of sperm that has the functional capacity to fertilize an egg. A traditional semen analysis measures sperm concentration, motility and morphology. However, these parameters are poor indicators of the ability to fertilize an egg.
- Do I need PS Detect and a traditional semen analysis?
- The combination of PS Detect and a traditional semen analysis will provide you and your medical provider with a more comprehensive evaluation of your fertility. Even if your traditional semen analysis is normal, there is no way of knowing if your sperm is capable of fertilizing an egg without knowing your PS Score.
- What is a PS Score?
- A PS Score is the percentage of fertilization competent sperm in your semen sample.
- What does it mean if my PS Score is below the reference range?
- A PS Score below the reference range indicates a decreased potential of sperm to fertilize an egg. You should speak with your provider for a comprehensive understanding of your fertility.
- Do I need a medical provider to order a test for me?
- Yes, a medical provider order is required for the PS Detect test. Please speak to your provider if you are interested in a PS Detect test. You will need to upload a signed order form to complete your order. If you do not have a medical provider, please contact [email protected] for assistance.
- How do I order PS Detect?
- If you have a signed Order Form, follow the provided QR code to complete your order. You will complete a health questionnaire and upload your order form. Once your order is received by our lab, your kit will be shipped within a few days.
- When will I receive my results?

- How much does PS Detect kit cost?
- $399
Understanding Your Results
Patients will receive their PS Score results through the PS Detect Semen Analysis report. Results can be compared to the reference range to determine whether or not the patient has a sufficient percentage of sperm capable of fertilization. These results should be assessed in conjuction with the traditional semen analysis results to have the most comprehensive understanding of fertility potential.
